The Everest Base Camp trek is one of the world’s most iconic journeys up the steep walls of the Himalayas — a 14-day trek through ancient Sherpa villages, high-altitude rhododendron forests, and deadly glacial terrain to stand at the foot of the world’s highest mountain.

The journey starts with a scenic flight from Ramechhap to Lukla, the entrance to the Khumbu, and then a slow descent to Phakding, along the Dudh Koshi River. The trail then ascends steadily to the famous trading centre of Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) where you have an acclimatization day to get used to the altitude and enjoy a wide range of views of Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kongde from this market town.

The trail then passes the monastery topped ridge of Tengboche (3860m) and high yak pastures through to Dingboche (4410m) where there is another rest day to consolidate the acclimatization before the more serious climbing phase begins. As soon as you cross over Dingboche, the scenery changes sharply; the vegetation becomes less thick, air gets harder and the sheer power of the mountains is awe inspiring.

After passing Lobuche (4910 m) and Gorak Shep (5180 m), you arrive at the major milestone of Everest Base Camp(5364 m), where fluttering prayer flags and the distant sound of glacial towers celebrate the great mountain of Everest. The highlight of the Everest base camp trek comes the following morning when you head for the highest point, Kala Patthar (5545 m) and witness the first light of day illuminate Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and many other peaks in a stunning panorama.

The descent follows the trail back up through Namche and down to Lukla, which comes with its own altitude envelope, and a solid understanding of the Sherpa culture, Buddhist traditions, and the raw beauty of the high Himalaya.

Frequently Asked Questions

A primary health issue at altitude is food safety. The higher up you go, the more susceptible you will be and the more important it becomes what you eat.

Avoid meat entirely. It is frequently carried on foot with porters or yaks without refrigeration which can result in food poisoning. Eat vegetarian food all the way.

Avoid alcohol and tobacco, too. Alcohol can interfere with acclimatization and can even be dangerous enough to mask the symptoms of a serious and potentially life-threatening condition known as high altitude cerebral edema (HACE).

Whereas a lot of the document verification along the Everest trail has become digital, there will be certain points along the way where you will require hard copies. The key points are: having a valid tourist visa and extensive travel health insurance. Both are to be well sorted by the time your departure date.

They ideal time you can trek to Everest Base Camp is from October through November or December until early spring. There are two ideal periods to visit, one before monsoon in March-May when the skies are clear, temperatures are tolerable, and mountain vistas are best, and the other after monsoon in September-November. During the monsoon season (June-July-August) the trails are slick and the rain extremely heavy, making hiking much more difficult.

The day unfolds from one similar to the other, with trekking, rest and acclimatization at its core. The route is carefully planned to ensure that the climb is not too steep and will be undertaken in a progressive manner allowing your body to acclimatise to the challenges of rising to higher altitudes.

Everest Base Camp is located in the Khumbu region of Nepal, at an elevation of 5,364 meters (17,598 ft) above sea level. Oxygen is reduced to almost half of its sea level strength there, so even short distances are more strenuous and fatigue comes on sooner.

Everest Base Camp trek is suitable for all ages, but only if you are healthy and well-equipped. It is successfully completed by the trekkers each year regardless of their age; those in their 50s, 60s and older. A person’s fitness and preparation are much more important than their age.

There’s nothing like being at the base of the world’s highest mountain. The hike is an adventure at high elevation alongside the Sherpa way of life and breathtaking vistas of some of the world’s most iconic peaks, all along one legendary trail. It’s a trip that leaves a lasting impression.
